 After the war, the Pandavas were remorseful and wanted the blessing of Lord Shiva. Shiva was not at all pleased with the Pandavas as they used deceit in war. Hence, he decided to evade them. At first he hid as a bull in Guptkashi. When the Pandavas came to catch him, he went to other parts in the state.

Lord Shiva started to appear at different locations across the Garhwal in parts. Somewhere his hair manifested. Somewhere his arm. His face in another location and navel still in another. In this way, the Pandavas erected a temple in all these five holy places, (which came to be known as the Panch Prayag) to seek forgiveness for their sins.
